Youth development at Crieff C.C. took another important step forward last
Wednesday with promising young player Cameron Gauld being asked to captain
the team against Dollar. The game was dominated by the big hitters on either
side on an evening full of the promise of a long balmy summer. The clear,
bright sunshine and the freshly mown outfield contributed to a feast of runs
and plenty of action for the spectators to enjoy.
Batting first in ideal conditions, Dollar cruised to a formidable total of
138 off their 20 overs. The young Crieff bowling attack enjoyed something of
a baptism of fire, unable to restrict the flow of runs or to take wickets.
The lads should take some consolation from the fact that experienced senior
player Jamie Alsop ended up with very similar figures in the final analysis.
The wickets that Crieff took all fell to Mohamed Anjum. His consistent line
and length and his deceptive pace kept a brake on the Dollar innings when
they threatened to run amok.
The Crieff innings began with Sean Gadsby and David Frost carefully playing
themselves in. The departure of David Frost, attacking a straight delivery,
let in Mohamed Anjum. A sucession of boundaries followed and Crieff began to
look a little more settled. However, in looking to attack the bowling,
Mohamed Anjum went for 19 and he was quickly followed by Daniel Mestecky
with 9. Cameron Gauld fell to a very sharp edge to first slip and Sean
Gadsby was run out attempting a quick single, struggling to get to his full
speed running with pads on. Crieff then opted to bring on their own senior
big hitters and Leon DeLange 39 and Jamie Alsop 28 batted out the remainder
of the Crieff innings undefeated. In finishing with 107 for 5, some 32 runs
shy of an unlikely victory, team manager Ken Walden expressed himself
delighted with several aspects of the game. 'We saw some excellent fielding
from Claire Gadsby and Andrew Cook, both making their debuts for the team
this season. Daniel Mestecky, Cameron Gauld and David Frost bowled very well
against aggressive batting. Sean Gadsby was exemplary in his rotation of the
strike especially in partnership with Mohamed Anjum at the top of the Crieff
batting order. I'd like to think that the overall experience was positive
and will benefit these players as they continue to develop'
